Motorola's Android 17 rollout is finally moving from testing toward stable software, and the current device list is much broader than just a handful of premium phones.
Around 50 Motorola smartphones across the Signature, Razr, Edge and Moto G families are listed to receive Android 17, with the stable rollout already beginning on the Motorola Edge 2025. Lenovo's official technology publication says newer Razr and Edge models are expected to receive priority before the update gradually expands to other eligible devices over the coming weeks and months in its latest Motorola Android 17 rollout guide.
For Motorola users in India, however, there is an important distinction: being eligible does not mean the update will arrive immediately.
Motorola explains on its official India software support page that Android upgrades must pass testing across different models, regions and distribution channels, so even owners of the same phone may receive an update at different times.

Motorola Has Started Its Stable Android 17 Rollout
Motorola has been testing Android 17 for months, including beta programs for several devices in India and other regions.
That testing is now starting to translate into stable software.
The Motorola Edge 2025 is among the first devices receiving the stable Android 17 update, while Lenovo says the rollout will gradually expand to the rest of the supported lineup rather than arriving everywhere at once in its published Android 17 device list.
That staged approach is expected.
A major Android upgrade has to work across different chipsets, cameras, modems, regional firmware packages and carrier configurations. Releasing it gradually gives Motorola time to identify major problems before software reaches every eligible device.
For Indian users, this means seeing an Android 17 screenshot from another country is not necessarily evidence that your own phone is missing an update.
Your regional firmware may simply be on a different schedule.

Motorola's current list covers its premium foldables, conventional Edge flagships and a surprisingly large number of Moto G phones.

The list above comes from Lenovo's August 10 Android 17 roundup for Motorola devices.
One thing worth keeping in mind is that Motorola sometimes sells closely related devices under different names depending on the market. Indian owners should therefore verify the exact model number of their phone instead of relying only on a similar international product name.
The Moto G List Is More Important Than It Looks
The Razr and Edge phones will naturally attract most of the attention, but the Moto G section may be the more important part of Motorola's update strategy.
Budget and mid-range Android phones have historically had shorter software lifecycles than premium flagships.
That gap is becoming harder for manufacturers to justify.
Samsung and Google have made long-term update support a major selling point, and buyers are increasingly asking how long a phone will remain current before looking only at its camera or processor.
Motorola including devices such as the Moto G57 Power, G67, G77, G86 and several 2025 Moto G models indicates that Android 17 is not being treated purely as a premium-phone upgrade.
For India in particular, that matters because Moto G devices compete in the much larger mid-range market rather than the relatively small ultra-premium segment.
Indian Motorola Phones Are Already Part of Android 17 Testing
India has not been left out of Motorola's Android 17 development cycle.
Motorola has specifically recruited Edge 70 Pro users in India for Android 17 beta testing, according to an official Motorola community testing post published on Lenovo's forums.
That gives Indian users a useful signal.
Motorola is not simply creating one global build and expecting it to work everywhere. Regional devices are actively involved in testing before the stable rollout.
This should improve compatibility with local configurations, although it does not guarantee a particular stable-release date.
Android 17 on Motorola Is More Than Google's Base Update
Motorola phones do not run an untouched copy of Google's Android interface.
Android 17 arrives alongside Motorola's own Hello UI changes, giving the company room to build features on top of the core operating system.

On Motorola hardware, those platform improvements are combined with company-specific interface refinements.
That makes the eventual upgrade more meaningful than a simple change from “Android 16” to “Android 17” in the Settings menu.
Razr Phones Could Benefit the Most
Android upgrades matter on every smartphone, but foldables have more opportunities to benefit from changes to multitasking and large-screen behaviour.
That puts Motorola's Razr devices in an interesting position.
A normal phone primarily needs Android to manage one main display.
A foldable may have to manage both an internal folding panel and an external cover screen, while also handling transitions between them.
Improvements to window management, app continuity and large-screen interfaces can therefore have a much bigger effect on a foldable.
That helps explain why newer Razr devices are expected to sit near the front of Motorola's Android 17 queue.
But Eligibility Is Not the Same as Availability
This is the part Indian users should pay the most attention to.
Motorola explicitly says Android OS updates can require hundreds of different software versions to be tested across models, regions and distribution channels before deployment, as explained on the company's India software-update support page.
That means two people can own what appears to be the same Motorola phone and still receive Android 17 at different times.
Regional firmware can differ.
Carrier certification can differ.
Even separate sales channels can sometimes affect rollout timing.
So if your device is on the supported list but Android 17 does not appear immediately, that is not necessarily a problem.
How to Check for Android 17 on Your Motorola Phone
Motorola will normally notify users automatically when an update becomes available.
You can also check manually by going to:

Motorola provides these exact instructions on its official software-update support page for India.
Before installing a major OS update, it is sensible to:
connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network;
charge the phone sufficiently;
keep enough free internal storage;
back up important photos, documents and authentication data.
One additional detail is worth noting: Motorola says users cannot downgrade to an older software version after installing an update through the normal process.
That makes waiting for the stable OTA particularly sensible if your Motorola phone is also your primary work or banking device.
What If Your Phone Is Missing From the List?
Do not immediately assume it has been abandoned.
The published list is useful, but Motorola's model lineup is unusually complicated across regions.
A phone may use one name internationally and another in a specific market, while software-support commitments can also vary between models.
The safest place to check is Motorola's official India software-upgrade portal, where users can look up device-specific update information.
Motorola itself says its support agents rely on that system for upgrade information.
If Motorola has not published a release date for your exact model, the company says that generally means the date is not yet available rather than giving users a date it cannot guarantee.
SpecFront Analysis: Motorola Is Improving, but Rollout Speed Is the Real Test
A long eligibility list looks impressive.
Delivering the software reliably is more important.
Motorola has historically faced stronger competition on software support than on hardware. The company often produces excellent displays, clean Android interfaces and competitive mid-range phones, but update consistency has not always been the first reason people choose Motorola over Samsung or Google.
Android 17 is an opportunity to change that perception.
The strongest signal is not that expensive Razr foldables are getting the update. That is expected.
The more meaningful signal is the inclusion of so many Edge and Moto G devices, because those are the phones that determine whether Motorola's improved software strategy reaches ordinary buyers rather than only flagship customers.
But the next several months will tell us far more than the eligibility list itself.
If Motorola can move Android 17 quickly from the Edge 2025 to its newer Edge, Razr and Moto G phones — including Indian variants — the company will have a stronger argument when buyers compare long-term value.
If rollout gaps stretch for months between regions and devices, the size of the supported-device list will matter much less.
Should You Install Android 17 Immediately?
For most users, there is no need to rush.
If Motorola sends your device the official stable OTA, installing it after backing up important data should be the safest route.
Beta software is different.
Motorola's own forums show that Android 17 testing has been available for selected devices and regions, including India, but beta builds exist specifically to uncover problems before public release.
Unless you actively enjoy testing unfinished software, the stable update is the better choice for a primary phone.
Banking apps, work accounts, battery stability and Bluetooth accessories are all more important than receiving a new interface a few weeks early.

Motorola's Android 17 update plan is encouraging because it reaches beyond the company's most expensive hardware.
The Razr family is well represented, the Edge lineup receives broad coverage, and the number of Moto G phones on the list is a positive sign for buyers who do not spend flagship money.
But 50 eligible phones is only half the story.
What matters now is how quickly Motorola turns eligibility into stable updates.
The Edge 2025 rollout shows that process has begun. Indian Android 17 testing on devices such as the Edge 70 Pro also suggests India is firmly part of Motorola's software roadmap.
If your Motorola is on the list, there is no reason to chase unofficial firmware. Check Motorola's India support portal, keep your important data backed up and wait for the stable OTA assigned to your regional model.
