The months of developer previews, canary builds, and beta testing are officially behind us. According to reports from Android Authority, Google has begun rolling out the first stable release of Android 17.
Codenamed internally as "Cinnamon Bun," the update transitions Android from a traditional mobile OS into an adaptive, intelligence-first system built around multitasking, foldables, and deep AI integrations.
What’s New in Android 17: Key Features
Google packed a variety of refined user interface changes, multitasking improvements, and creator tools into this major milestone. Here are the headline features driving the upgrade:
Universal App Bubbles & Bubble Bar: Any app can now be converted into a floating desktop-style bubble by simply long-pressing its icon. On foldables and tablets, these bubbles dock neatly into a dedicated Bubble Bar at the bottom of the display for effortless app switching.
Screen Reactions: A built-in screen recorder extension that lets creators and power users record their selfie camera concurrently with the on-screen display—eliminating the need for third-party green-screen overlay tools.
Gemini Intelligence & Pause Point: On-device AI acts proactively across multi-step workflows. Meanwhile, Pause Point introduces a digital wellness splash screen with a 10-second countdown to discourage mindless app opening and doomscrolling.
Foldable Gaming Mode & Free Orientation: Android 17 mandates large-screen resizability and introduces an optimized 50/50 gaming layout—displaying gameplay on the top half while projecting a dynamic virtual gamepad below.
Interactive Picture-in-Picture (PiP): PiP windows are no longer passive video players; they remain completely interactive while floating above other open applications.
Which Devices Get Android 17?
While Google's Pixel lineup gets day-one priority, major Android partners including Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola, and Nothing are preparing their respective skin updates (such as Samsung's One UI 9).
Brand | Priority Status | Likely Eligible Devices |
Google Pixel | Live Now | Pixel 6 series and newer, Pixel Fold series, Pixel Tablet |
Samsung | Rolling Out / Upcoming | Galaxy S23, S24, S25 series; Z Fold 5/6/7/8; Z Flip 5/6/7/8; Select A-series (A35/A55+) |
OnePlus | Beta Testing / Expected Q3–Q4 | OnePlus 11, 12, 13; OnePlus Open series; Nord 3/4 series |
Xiaomi | Expected Q3–Q4 | Xiaomi 13, 14, 15 series; MIX Fold lineup; select Redmi Note series |
Motorola | Expected Q4–Q1 Next Year | Razr (2023, 2024, 2025 series); Edge 40, Edge 50 series |
Nothing | Expected Q3–Q4 | Phone (2), Phone (2a), Phone (3) |
What to Expect Next
If you own a recent Google Pixel device, you can check for the stable update right now via Settings > System > System update. For owners of Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola, or Nothing hardware, update timelines will vary depending on carrier certification and individual skin beta programs over the coming months.
Verify the release on your device
A report of a stable rollout does not mean every Pixel or region receives the update simultaneously. Check Google’s official Android and Pixel update pages, your build number and the security patch date. Back up important data, charge the phone and allow time for post-update app optimisation.
Eligibility lists need caution
The partner-device table is a forecast, not a set of manufacturer commitments. Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola and Nothing control their own schedules, and carrier or regional variants can differ. “Pixel 6 and newer” should also be checked against Google’s final support notice before installation.
Should you update immediately?
Most users should wait for the OTA offered through Settings rather than sideloading an image. Users who depend on banking, accessibility, work-profile or specialist apps should check compatibility first. New AI and large-screen features may require particular hardware and may not appear on every eligible phone.
SpecFront’s take
The release is more useful when judged by stability, battery life and app compatibility than by a long feature list. We will revise eligibility and rollout status as manufacturers publish model-specific schedules.
