Generative features get the demonstration applause: remove the stranger, extend the landscape, replace the jacket, fix the reflection. The quieter improvement in Photoshop’s 2026 release may have a longer life in everyday work. Clarity, Dehaze and Grain can now live as adjustment layers.
Adobe says the new Clarity and Dehaze layer and the separate Grain layer are non-destructive, maskable and layer-based. That means a photographer can change the strength later, restrict the effect to part of a frame, alter the blend mode or remove the edit without reconstructing the image.
Reversibility is a creative feature
Non-destructive editing is sometimes described like good file hygiene, something responsible people do after naming their folders. In practice, it changes the quality of the decisions. A destructive edit asks, “Am I certain?” An adjustment layer asks, “Is this direction interesting?” The second question is much easier to explore.
Consider Dehaze on a landscape. Applied globally and aggressively, it can add brittle contrast, oversaturate a blue sky and make distant hills feel cut out. As a layer, it can be reduced after a night away from the image, masked out of the foreground and blended differently without repeating the raw conversion.
Grain benefits even more from context. The right amount depends on output size. A texture that feels convincing at full resolution can disappear in a social crop or become coarse in a small print. Keeping it live until export allows the treatment to follow the destination rather than forcing every destination to inherit one baked decision.
Build a stack that explains itself
A useful working file should tell the next editor—or your future self—what happened. Put broad tonal corrections low in the stack. Add local contrast above them. Use descriptive names such as “Dehaze — sky only” or “Grain — print finish,” and group finishing layers separately from compositing layers. The file becomes easier to revise because the structure carries intent.
Masks are the difference between an effect and an edit. Clarity may help the texture of a building while making skin harsh. Dehaze may recover a horizon while crushing a dark coat. Start with the whole-frame effect only to find the useful strength, then mask it to the part of the photograph that asked for it.
Where generative tools fit
The same Photoshop update also improves Reference Image for Generative Fill. Adobe says object references can preserve identity while adapting geometry, scale, rotation, lighting, colour and perspective to a scene. That is useful for controlled composites, but it does not remove the need to inspect edges, shadows, reflections and the factual meaning of an image.
Adobe later introduced a Photoshop AI Assistant in public beta and expanded Firefly’s image editor with Generative Fill, Remove, Expand, Upscale and background removal. The company describes the assistant as a conversational way to request edits on web and mobile. Convenience is real, but a prompt history is not yet as legible as a disciplined layer stack. For important work, keep generated material isolated and label it.
A practical 2026 workflow
- Develop exposure and colour in the raw file before Photoshop.
- Open as a Smart Object when the raw interpretation may change.
- Do structural cleanup on separate layers rather than the background.
- Add Clarity, Dehaze and Grain as named adjustment layers with masks.
- Place generative changes on their own layers and inspect at 100%.
- Save a master file, then make output-specific crops and sharpening.
This looks slower than flattening a quick result. It is faster the first time a client asks for less atmosphere, a different crop or a clean version without the generated object.

AI will keep absorbing repetitive work, and some of it will be genuinely helpful. The durable workflow is the one that leaves room for judgement after the machine has finished being impressive.
