There is a particular kind of image that has become easy to spot online: smooth lighting, frictionless gradients, pristine lettering and a subject whose skin, clothes and surroundings all feel as though they were made from the same polished material. It can be technically impressive and still leave almost nothing behind in the memory.
That sameness is the useful context for Canva’s 2026 forecast, which calls the year “Imperfect by Design” and identifies ten visual directions shaped by its creator search data, a designer advisory board and a survey of 1,000 creators. The headline sounds like an invitation to make rough work. It is better understood as a request to make deliberate work again.
Imperfection is not the same as carelessness
A crooked line does not automatically carry personality, just as a clean grid does not automatically feel corporate. The difference is whether the choice belongs to the idea. A hand-drawn annotation can make a repair guide feel immediate. A scanned paper texture can give an album poster a physical memory. The same devices pasted onto every banking app or product launch will quickly become another template.
Canva says searches for tactile terms such as “soft neutral backgrounds” and “tactile design” rose 30% year over year, reaching nearly 16 million impressions. That number is interesting not because it tells every designer to add paper grain, but because it signals an appetite for surfaces that do not look infinitely reproducible.
The strongest response is therefore not “add noise.” It is to ask where the work came from. Keep the pencil thumbnail that found the composition. Photograph the real material instead of downloading the first texture pack. Let a local sign, fabric or printing method influence the palette. Those inputs produce variation for a reason.
AI works best as material, not art director
The forecast is not anti-AI. In Canva’s survey, 77% of creators described AI as an essential partner, while 80% said 2026 would be a year of regaining creative control. That tension is the story. Generative tools are already part of the workflow; the scarce skill is deciding what deserves to survive the workflow.
Use a model to generate options, remove a production bottleneck or expose a direction you had not considered. Then interrupt it. Change the type, rebuild the hierarchy, replace the generic object, redraw the strange hand and discard the version whose only virtue is polish. If the final piece could have been produced from anybody’s prompt, the process has not yet earned its ending.
Canva’s broader product direction also matters here. The company describes its Visual Suite as a place to move from whiteboarding to social assets in one workflow, and its current campaign presents AI as a route from a rough idea to multiple formats. Canva’s own 2026 campaign explicitly frames the tool as a creative partner that helps turn a small spark into something shareable. Speed is valuable, but it makes editorial judgement more important, not less.
A practical way to use the trend
Start the next project with one constraint that a template cannot choose for you. Use only photographs made within one kilometre of the subject. Build the headline from handwriting by someone involved in the story. Limit the palette to colours found in the product. Keep one awkward crop because it improves the emotional rhythm.
Then test the result at the sizes where it will live. Texture that feels intimate on a poster can turn muddy in a phone notification. Expressive type can lose accessibility in a navigation label. Imperfection should survive contact with function: readable contrast, clear hierarchy, sensible image compression and an interface that still tells people what to do.

“Imperfect by Design” is useful when it gives creators permission to leave evidence of thought in the finished work. It becomes useless the moment imperfection is treated as a preset. The goal is not to make a design look handmade. The goal is to make it feel authored.
