Helldivers 2 has just become significantly easier for PlayStation players to jump into. Sony and Arrowhead Game Studios have added the popular co-op shooter to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, while simultaneously launching a major new update called Devoid of Liberty.
According to PlayStation's official announcement, Helldivers 2 joined the Game Catalog on August 12, 2026, giving PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium members access to the game as part of their subscription.
The timing isn't accidental. The Game Catalog release coincides with Devoid of Liberty, an update that pushes Helldivers deeper into the mysterious Illuminate-controlled Void and introduces new threats to the ongoing Galactic War.
Helldivers 2 is now on PlayStation Plus
Starting today, eligible PlayStation Plus subscribers can access Helldivers 2 through the Game Catalog.
Sony separately confirmed in its August PlayStation Plus Game Catalog announcement that Helldivers 2 is available worldwide from August 12 for PlayStation Plus Extra members, while the broader August lineup arrives on August 18.
That makes Helldivers 2 one of the month's biggest PlayStation Plus additions.
The game is built heavily around multiplayer cooperation, allowing squads of up to four players to fight together across hostile planets while completing objectives for Super Earth.
Friendly fire remains an important part of the experience, meaning poorly placed explosives, Stratagems and heavy weapons can be just as dangerous to teammates as they are to alien enemies.
Devoid of Liberty takes players into the Void
Existing Helldivers aren't being left out of today's news.
Arrowhead has also released the Devoid of Liberty update, expanding the game's ongoing conflict with the Illuminate.
According to Arrowhead's announcement on PlayStation Blog, players are being sent into a new frontier as Super Earth attempts to reclaim territory affected by the expanding Void.
The planets affected by it have undergone strange mutations, and Arrowhead says the changes become even more significant as players move closer to the Void.
That gives the new content a noticeably different atmosphere from many of Helldivers 2's existing battlefields.
The Illuminate threat is getting more dangerous
The Illuminate have already provided Helldivers with a very different kind of opponent compared with the Terminids and Automatons.
Devoid of Liberty appears designed to push that conflict further.
Arrowhead says reconnaissance missions will be required as Super Earth attempts to gather information about what is happening within the Void. The developer describes the affected planets as permanently altered by unusual mutations.
What awaits players deeper inside remains part of the mystery.
This approach fits particularly well with Helldivers 2's evolving Galactic War, where new enemy attacks and major events can change the state of the wider conflict rather than simply existing as isolated missions.
PlayStation Plus could bring a new wave of Helldivers
Adding Helldivers 2 to PlayStation Plus could prove important for the game's multiplayer community.
Unlike buying the game separately, Extra and Premium subscribers can now find it directly within their existing Game Catalog subscription.
And Helldivers 2 is particularly dependent on cooperation.
Players can join forces with up to three friends, coordinate equipment and Stratagems, and complete objectives together while battling overwhelming enemy forces. Sony describes the Helldivers as an elite fighting force tasked with defending Super Earth and spreading its satirical version of "Managed Democracy."
The Game Catalog release therefore has the potential to introduce a large group of new recruits at exactly the same time that veteran players are exploring Devoid of Liberty.
There's also a huge community challenge
Arrowhead and PlayStation are giving the newly expanded community another objective.
Players are being challenged to collectively eliminate 500 million enemies by August 18.
If the Helldivers 2 community reaches that target, players will unlock four Helldiver PlayStation avatars, according to the official PlayStation announcement.
It is exactly the kind of community-wide objective that suits Helldivers 2.
Rather than treating every player's campaign as an entirely separate experience, the game frequently presents its battles as pieces of a much larger war involving the entire player base.
With PlayStation Plus potentially bringing in new players, reaching 500 million eliminations may become a little easier.
Helldivers 2 leads a strong August PlayStation Plus lineup
Helldivers 2 isn't the only major game coming to the Game Catalog this month.
Sony's official August lineup also includes Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, Vampire Survivors and Hell is Us, among other titles.
PlayStation Plus Premium is also receiving Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams and Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire.
Most of those additions become available on August 18, making Helldivers 2 unusual because Sony has released it into the catalog earlier, on August 12, alongside the new update.
Sony notes that Game Catalog and Premium/Deluxe lineups can vary depending on region, so subscribers should check their local PlayStation Store for availability.
A good time to enlist
For players who have been interested in Helldivers 2 but haven't yet joined the fight for Super Earth, its PlayStation Plus arrival creates an obvious entry point.
The timing makes the addition even more appealing.
Instead of simply putting an older game into the subscription catalog, Sony is adding Helldivers 2 on the same day Arrowhead is pushing its evolving war forward with Devoid of Liberty.
Existing players get a new frontier to investigate, while PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers get a chance to join them through the Game Catalog.
And with a 500-million-enemy community challenge running until August 18, Super Earth could certainly use the reinforcements.
